In the Bible Jesus dines with a tax collector (Zacchaeus) and has a tax collector among his disciples (Matthew). The Bible doesn’t say tax collectors are going to hell, they were regarded as sinners by the general population because they were encouraged to collect taxes in excess of the law to supplement their income. I think you have half-remembered some Bible stories from Sunday school, or maybe you attend a church with a conservative spin on things.
